Frequently Asked Questions

"Since joining Pilates almost 2 years ago with you, I have no more back pain and my golf swing has even improved! I am committed to Pilates (the reformer) twice a week with you and know it is one of the best things I can do for myself to maintain my flexibility as I age."

Pam K.

What is Pilates?

Pilates (pi -LAT-eez) is an exercise series that was developed by Joseph Pilates during World War I to rehabilitate war patients. The exercises target the deep abdominal muscles, lengthen and strengthen the spine and core, improve posture, and correct muscle imbalances.

How is Pilates different from Yoga?

Although both Pilates and Yoga are mind-body systems that focus on breath control, Pilates is done either on the mat or equipment where your body weight is supported. Yoga is mat-derived only and focuses more on meditation, depending on the method. The equipment used in Pilates allows for fluid range of motion, stretching and strengthening from the core.

What is the difference between Pilates mat and Pilates equipment training?

Mat training is done on an exercise mat and can be done with or without auxiliary equipment (circles, bands, etc.) to increase the challenge or add support. Mat work requires you to use your own body weight without any assistance. Marion on the ReformerPilates equipment (Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, Barrel) provides assistance and support to help strengthen abdominals and lower back and allows for more work through the hip joints, shoulder complex, arms, and legs. Both systems compliment each other and many clients find their performance improves after practicing each.

How often should I attend Pilates sessions?

We recommend two sessions per week, preferably alternating equipment and mat. If your time schedule allows you only one session per week, then we strongly recommend the equipment class, supplemented occasionally with a mat class. See information about class times and rates on our Schedule & Rates page.

Will I lose weight doing Pilates?

Pilates will help you to move towards a healthier and happier lifestyle through balancing body and mind. To lose weight, we strongly recommend some form of cardio to add the fat-burning component needed to lose weight.

Do I need to be in shape to start Pilates?

No, just starting is the key to experiencing the benefits of Pilates. We promise to work hard to meet your fitness goals safely and effectively.

I am already coordinated and fit. Do I still need to take the introductory private sessions?

Yes! This is done for the benefit of you and other members of the group. You will appreciate the one-on-one experience of learning, as well as the attention to details of your body and its capacity to learn and focus. Pilates requires sufficient knowledge of the equipment and exercises to have the confidence to progress. The most efficient and optimal format is to follow the recommended sequence of intro/private sessions followed by group sessions.
